Recycling Tires with the Help of 3D
To improve the efficiency of used tire recycling, TireTech, in collaboration with AT Sensors and aku.automation, has developed an innovative tire inspection system. At its core is AT’s CS 2040 3D sensor, which uses laser triangulation to perform a detailed 3D analysis of the tire’s tread depth, shape, and structure. This high-precision system enables the fast classification of tires for recycling or reuse, setting new standards in sustainable tire processing.
Challenge
The biggest challenge in developing the tire inspection system was ensuring accurate classification despite the wide variety of tire types, sizes, and manufacturers. The inconsistent placement of tire information, such as DOT numbers, required a flexible scanning approach, while a comprehensive database had to be built to recognize and categorize all relevant tire features. Additionally, the system had to detect specific materials, like adhesives, to prevent hazards during recycling.
Solution
To tackle these challenges, TireTech, AT Sensors, and aku.automation developed a 3D tire inspection system using AT’s CS 2040 3D sensors with laser triangulation technology. The system scans tires in just 10 seconds, capturing a detailed 3D point cloud to assess tread depth, shape, and structure, while an AI-driven image processing software classifies each tire based on an extensive database. This ensures accurate identification and sorting, enabling sustainable recycling and reducing disposal costs.
